KNOW THE KNOWER

In our bid to know the things on the outside we tend to forget that which is inside. We talk about faraway things or want to know about distant things such as what is heaven; what is hell; different types of hells and heavens; what is god; what is his name; where does he live etc but we forget to know that which is very near to us. Not only near but that which is nearest of all.

Whole day we focus on the outside. We use our senses to see and know the things on the outside but we never try to know the knower – the one who knows. I will take few examples from our daily life in order to stress what I want to say. I look at the tree and make my mental commentary within such as oh, that’s a tree; it’s small or big; bearing fruits/flowers or not; green or dry but I never try to know that which actually sees the tree, I mean the seer. Me, claiming or assuming that I see the tree with my eyes is not correct because eyes are just openings to the world but who is the seer? I read a book and try to know about that subject but who is the knower? I hear a child crying and mumble within saying oh! the child is crying; why is he crying; is he in pain etc but who is that who hears? My ears are only windows but not the hearer. Our commentaries within are our mental nonsense. That’s our reaction which comes later. This is true about everything else which we take in through our senses.

Knowing the knower is knowing the Self. Knowing the knower is knowing that ‘I’ in ‘Who Am I’. Knowing the knower is what Self-realization is. Without knowing the knower whatever else we know on the outside is just information which is of no use except that it helps us to survive better. But the spiritual wellbeing does not happen with the knowledge which we gather from outside. Spiritual wellbeing arises only when we know the one who knows.

For knowing the knower you need to turn in or look in. You need to shift your focus from outward (bahirmukha) to inward (antarmukha). This is what turning inward is. Turning inward means turning direction of your energy from outward to inward. This shift in focus is what spirituality is all about. Turning inward is becoming aware of the awareness itself. Meditation is turning inward. Meditation is shifting focus from outward to inward. Meditation is a method to know the ultimate knower. One who knows the Self; one who knows the knower; one who knows that ‘I’ will know everything else as well. In fact, thereafter, there will not be any need to know anything else on the outside because you will then know that others too are at par with you, others too are as real as you are.
