MEDITATION IS CONSCIOUS SLEEP
If you observe it closely, you will see that the whole creation – trees; mountains; other creatures etc - is in deep meditation. All other forms have no sense of individuality. They do not have enough consciousness to become aware of their individuality or existence. They exist in total unconsciousness. Compared to the rest of creation, only a human being is better placed because a human being has evolved to a certain level of consciousness and because of that he has a sense of individuality. He has some amount of consciousness, which other forms do not have, and hence a human being can become aware of his existence. He knows that he exists which other creatures do not.
We too undergo forced ‘meditation’ daily while we are in deep sleep because in deep sleep our individuality is not operative. This forced ‘meditation’ which we undergo during our sleep happens to us in complete unawareness. Because we cannot maintain awareness and hence are unable to experience this. That’s why this forced ‘meditation’ is of no use as far as spiritual wellbeing is concerned because all that we do or happen to us in unawareness, rather, breeds more unawareness. Spiritual wellbeing arises only by cultivating awareness.
Since in deep sleep we are unable to remain aware or conscious and hence meditation has to begin during the waking hours when we are a bit conscious. This is worth knowing that only a human being can become fully conscious if he strives and hence meditation. Meditation is a method to become fully conscious which is our reality. That’s why meditation is also referred to as a conscious sleep which is that you are asleep at the level of your body and mind but fully conscious and awake within. You are fully awake and alert to the movements of body and especially of mind. On movements of body, you have some control but on movements of mind you do not have any control. Mind goes on incessantly and uncontrollably during our waking hours in the form of thoughts. Meditation is to remain alert to this movement of the mind. If you do not remain alert to these thoughts then you will get entangled with these thoughts and you will become a thought which is bondage. But if you remain alert to these thoughts which; if you just become aware of these thoughts, then this thought energy will get transformed into pure energy which is freedom. This alertness or awareness is what meditation is. Awareness is transforming and hence liberating. You go beyond what you become aware of because awareness is absorbing which simply absorbs all that comes within its sphere. Awareness is a fire which burns up all that which is not integral to us.
In your sleep you are not only asleep at the level of your body and mind but ‘you’ as a ‘being’, as an experiencer are also asleep. Sleep is unconsciousness. Meditation is not unconsciousness. Meditation is consciousness. That’s the only difference between being awake and being asleep – if you are conscious within, you are in meditation even in your sleep. But if you are unconscious then you are asleep even in your waking hours. Bhitar se jagne ka naam hi dhyan hai.
