THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO STATES IS……….
(this post is in continuation of the last post)
Ego or individuality is the only difference between your two states of deep sleep and waking. In deep sleep there is no body-consciousness and hence you have no feeling or sense of individuality or ego. In deep sleep nothing exists for you. Even the world does not exist because the world exists in your mind and in deep sleep the mind too is not there. In deep sleep only the reality exists. In deep sleep, there is no ‘other’ but only one reality. You are one with the whole. Similar to the rest of creation, you too exist and move with the whole and hence no suffering or unhappiness. In oneness there cannot be any suffering or unhappiness. Suffering or unhappiness exists in duality. Suffering or unhappiness is when ‘other’ is.
But this changes with your waking up because with your waking up, your individuality also wakes up. You become body-conscious and with that your imaginary identity or ego becomes operative. With ego, comes the personality. Ego or personality is ‘I’ feeling. ‘I’ feeling is that I exist; feeling that I exist not as a part of this whole but as an independent entity. With ‘I’ arises others or the world too. So naturally, this ‘I’ is now in conflict and competition with others and hence unhappiness and suffering in the waking hours. Ego in you, is operative in the form of mind. Mind splits; mind divides and hence suffering. No other creature but only a human being knows suffering because suffering is of the mind.
Deep sleep is, thus, your true identity because in deep sleep, what exists is your reality and not your imaginary individuality. In deep sleep, your individuality or ego is absent and hence you exist free of all worries. Worries; anxieties; struggle; conflicts etc are of the ego or of the mind. However, the unfortunate thing about sleep is that we are unable to experience this state of bliss because this happens to us in unconsciousness; in unawareness. Sleep is unconsciousness. In fact, rest of the whole creation, say for example; trees; mountains; other creatures etc too exist in total bliss but they cannot experience this bliss because they all exist in unconsciousness.
Now, if you want to experience this bliss you have to realize this bliss in your waking hours when you are a bit conscious. That’s the only difference and that’s the only challenge. If you miss the bliss then you are asleep and exist in unconsciousness (behoshi) like the rest of the creation. On the other hand if you can experience this bliss then you are awake and exist in your divinity or consciousness (hosh or chetana). One who accepts this challenge is spiritual because spirituality is to realize this bliss while you are awake unlike the sleep in which the experiencer is not present.
That’s why meditation. Meditation is a practice to experience this bliss while you are fully awake and conscious within. Self-realization is to realize and stay in this bliss. A Self-realized being is in bliss all the time, not only in his waking hours but also in his sleep. Because he is now conscious all the time and bliss is of consciousness
