MEDITATION IS NOT WATCHING THOUGHTS

To say that you should watch or you can watch your thoughts while you sit in for meditation is not correct. This is because meditation and mind (thought), like two sides of the coin, cannot exist together. Thought is nothing but mind and mind is nothing but a mass of thoughts. Thus, when meditation is, mind is not and when mind is meditation is not. In fact, the very objective of meditation is to dispel or suspend thoughts. So, if you are watching your thoughts then know that you are not meditating. Thought means you have strayed away from meditation and mind has taken over.

The truth is that you can never watch your thoughts. You only realize, post-facto, that you were in thoughts which you wrongly label as watching thoughts. Meditation is awareness. Meditation is consciousness and so long you can maintain your awareness or consciousness (sajagta), thought can never arise. Thought or mind can arise only when the real ‘you’, I mean, that awareness or consciousness, is not there. It’s like, a thief can enter a house only when the owner is not home.

We need to understand one important fact about thought and which is that a thought is nothing but energy. The very substance of a thought is not words but energy. The words which we give to this energy are ours which make it a thought. These words will be of that language which we learnt as a part of our social grooming. Thus an Englishman will have thoughts in English; a French will have thoughts in his language; a Tamil person will have thoughts in Tamil language and so on. Not only but even at the same time, two persons of the same language, will give different words to their thoughts. Giving words to this energy means your mind or individuality or ego is operative because words are of the mind. Thus, what is important is to become aware of that energy itself before you give words to this energy; before it becomes a thought. You must be so aware, so alert that you can watch the rising of this energy – urja ka uthav - itself. Staying with this alertness or awareness is what meditation is. If you can maintain this alertness and watch this rising of energy itself, without giving it words, then this energy cannot become a thought and this rising energy will then fall back into the Source from which it arose and that is what transformation of energy is.

Transformation means rising energy is stopped from going out and instead stays within. If the rising energy stays within then it falls back into its Source and is transformed into pure energy. You need to become aware of this energy rising at its origin itself before it becomes a thought and thus, nip it in the bud and stop it from becoming a thought. Because, once you give words to this energy and it becomes a thought then it will live its full life. You cannot help it.

Thus, meditation is not watching thoughts. Meditation is to become aware of the rising of energy (urja ka uthav) itself. Meditation is watching the energy as energy without giving it words. When you do not give it words the energy is not dissipated and instead it falls back into its Source similar to the rising wave falling back into the ocean itself and thus merging with the source or ocean. That’s what transformation of energy is and meditation is transformation of energy – transformation of mind-energy into pure energy or consciousness.
