SUSHUPTI AND SAMADHI – DIFFERENCE IS OF AWARENESS ONLY

Ordinary sleep and dreamless sleep are two different things. Ordinary sleep (nidra) is full of dreams and dream means others because dreams are always about others. In ordinary sleep your ego or individuality is operative and hence the dreams. Thus, sleep is nothing but one of the states of your mind because mind is your ego or individuality. Sleep or nidra is not oneness. Sleep belongs to duality because in sleep ‘others’ exist. Dreamless sleep, on the other hand, is without any dreams because in dreamless sleep your ego or individuality is not operative. In dreamless sleep, you exist without ego or mind. Dreamless sleep is thus not of mind but is beyond mind and that which is beyond mind is beyond duality. Thus, dreamless sleep is oneness. In dreamless sleep, there is no ‘others’. Dreamless sleep is also known as sushupti. Sushupti is your natural state because in sushupti there is no duality. In sushupti what exists is only one reality or just the existence.

Now, your waking state too is not any different from your ordinary sleep because in your waking state also you are dreaming. These dreams happen and continue all the time in your mind in the form of thoughts because your ego is operative during your waking state. The only difference is that in ordinary sleep you dream with your eyes closed and in waking hours you dream with your eyes open. Thus, like sleep, waking state too is a state of your mind because in waking state, your ego or individuality is operative. Ego means others and dream too means others because dreams are always about others.

Though sushupti is oneness or one reality but unfortunate thing about this state is that this happens to you in unconsciousness; this happens to you in sleep which is unconsciousness. You are unable to experience this because in sleep the experiencer is not present. You need to know that all that happens to you in unconsciousness does not bring spiritual wellbeing. Spiritual wellbeing arises only when you are there fully conscious.

In deep sleep though the ego is absent but it has not dissolved altogether. It only disappears temporarily into unconsciousness or into sleep because sleep is unconsciousness. The ego will rise again as you wake up from your sleep or as you wake up in a new body after death. Temporary disappearance of ego into unconsciousness or sleep is just nature’s arrangement or nature resting your ego for time being. This does not liberate or release you from bondage or physical existence. Release or mukti can and will happen only when you consciously dissolve or rest your ego or individuality into its source. Source of ego is the same consciousness. Conscious dissolution or merger of ego means the seer; seen and seeing or the knower; known and knowing or the witness; witnessed and witnessing all merge into consciousness or its source. What thereafter remains is pure consciousness. If you can exist without ego in your waking state then it is dissolution or merger of ego into its source which is consciousness itself.

That’ how Concentration (dharana ); Meditation (dhyana) and Samadhi are. In Concentration both subject and object are present. In Meditation only the subject is present – the object disappears or merges into the subject. In Samadhi, even the subject is not there. The trinity i.e. seer; seen and seeing merges or disappears into the source or consciousness and what remains is just the oneness or consciousness. In Samadhi, there is no duality. In Concentration and Meditation duality remains. Concentration, Meditation and Samadhi, that’s the order. It starts with Concentration and ends with Samadhi. Concentration leads to Meditation and Meditation finally culminates into Samadhi.

If you can achieve this sushupti in your waking state then you are home. You will come awake or enlightened. You will be liberated while being alive. The same sushupti (dreamless sleep) would become Samadhi (awakening or super-consciousness) with just one difference and that difference is of awareness. Deep sleep with unawareness is sushupti and deep sleep with awareness is Samadhi or awakening.
