TAKING UNREAL FOR REAL IS MAYA
Moon is a reflection because it reflects the light of the Sun. Moon does not have its own light. Moon depends on the Sun for light which itself is the source. Now, moon imagining the reflected light of Sun to be its own light is ignorance. Moon’s living in the ignorance or mistaken belief that he is all; he is the source of light, is what illusion (bhranti) or maya is. Thus maya is living life in ignorance i.e. being ignorant of one’ reality and instead living life under one’s own assumed or make-believe reality. By living under this illusion, the moon would not only live a false life, but would also not make an attempt to seek and thus would never know the reality that the source of his reflected light is not him but the Sun, without which it would not even have been able to reflect the light.
The above may not be true for the moon but is certainly true for the man because whole of the humanity is living life under a mistaken belief, under an assumed or imaginary identity and hence living in ignorance which is what maya or illusion is. Let us understand how it is? Consciousness or energy is the reality of this existence. This energy is the real doer because everything in this existence is happening because of this energy. This physical body is inert or jada which cannot subsist on its own. This body is just a tool through which this energy is finding expression. Now between these two i.e. consciousness (Chetan) and body (jada), a third imaginary identity i.e. ‘I’ is born. This ‘I’ is pure imagination which arises because of our being conscious of the body. In our sleep, this ‘I’ is absent because body-consciousness is not there. This ‘I’, is thus maya or illusion because there is no such thing as ‘I’. ‘I’ is non-existent. If you search within you will only find emptiness but you will not find anything which you can name as ‘I’.
A human being thus lives an illusory or a false life. Not only but because he keeps nourishing this illusion of ‘I’m”, all the time, he never makes an attempt to seek and hence never comes to realize his real identity which is that the consciousness or energy is the real source of life and is the reason for this body moving around. Thus taking unreal for real is maya; taking untruth for truth is maya; taking physical reality for ultimate reality is maya; taking body for consciousness is maya.
This mistaken belief of ‘I’ is the root cause of human suffering. We, thus, live our whole life in fear – fear of death and fear of something undesirable happening to us. Even the fear of undesirable happening is also an indirect reminder of death. Why this fear? Because that which is non-existent or unreal has become real for us. Death is only because body has become real for us. Otherwise, there is no such thing as death because death is of the body and body is anyway jada and hence is dead, always – body was dead y/day; is dead even in this moment when you are reading this and will be so tomorrow too.
On the other hand, that which is real or alive is alive forever whether you are aware or not. You becoming aware of truth or not does not make any difference to the Truth per se because truth is truth always and lie is lie always whatever you may do to cover it. But becoming aware of truth can make difference to you. It can prove to be a game-changer for you because awareness will take you beyond your make-believe reality and you will live an authentic life. A fake life is an opportunity wasted. Unawareness is suffering and awareness is release from suffering. Hence the only thing you need to do is to become aware of your reality. Meditation is a method to becoming aware of one’s reality and going beyond the game of maya.
