CONFUSION AND CLARITY
The common example of confusion which is usually sighted with reference to spirituality is of seeing a snake in a rope. What happened was that in the night when it was pitch dark you saw something curvy lying on the floor and you imagined this to be a snake. Because you thought it to be a snake, not only you were full of fear but you also thought of using a stick to chase the ‘snake’ away. Before you could do anything someone suggested to light a lamp which you quickly did and in that light, you were surprised to see that what you imagined to be a snake was really not a snake but a rope lying there.
Light, thus, brought clarity and in that clarity, you could see the things as they are and consequent to that all fear too had disappeared. Light, thus, is clarity and darkness is confusion. It was darkness which caused this bhram or confusion of seeing a snake in a rope. Also, confusion prevailed only so long there was no light. The moment you brought in light, not only the darkness was gone but with that, the prevailing confusion and accompanying fear too had gone.
Light and darkness are just symbolic of what we know as consciousness and unconsciousness respectively. Consciousness is awareness and hence is light and unconsciousness is unawareness and hence is darkness. Consciousness is clarity and unconsciousness is confusion.
Mind is unconsciousness and hence represents darkness. Mind is the sole reason for the confusion. This confusion is by way of noise which the mind makes all the time in the form of our thoughts, reactions; preferences; liking; disliking; judgements; opinions etc. Mind survives by the confusion it creates and the noise it makes. This noise of mind, distorts the reality and thus we cannot see or fail to see things as they are and instead see the things in the way we like to see them. And this is how the mind creates confusion or bhranti of seeing a snake in a rope. This bhranti is commonly known as maya or illusion. For example you saw something and your mind made a quick reaction saying ‘it is a tree’. This language or thought that ‘it is a tree’ has nothing to do with the reality. This language is our nonsense, our definition which mind imposes upon what we saw because tree does not say ‘I’m a tree’. It is we say so because mind not only has a sense of ‘doer’ about itself but it also has its own agenda or intention.
Consciousness, on the other hand, which is the reality of this existence, is pure silence, pure stillness pure presence or just being. Its nature is of pure illumination. Consciousness is like a mirror which just reflects the things as it is; as they are and does not add or impose anything of its own upon the things which it reflects. Consciousness makes no noise and also has no sense of being a ‘doer’ about itself. Consciousness is pure energy which has no intention or agenda of its own. It simply reflects or absorbs what is there. Consciousness is just plain watching.
Now, what we need to understand is that mind or unconsciousness has no positive existence like a physical object but a negative existence i.e. it is just an absence of consciousness like darkness is an absence of light. Mind or unconsciousness or darkness has no existence per se and can exist only in the absence of consciousness. Mind has no light of its own and simply reflects the light of consciousness. Light is of consciousness. Now mind assuming or imagining that consciousness’s light is its own and thus replacing itself for the consciousness is what creates confusion.
Confusion is because mind wants to see something in everything. Mind wants to see a dog, a tree, a man, a woman and for that matter, it wants to see something in everything. Mind can never see the things as they are. Mind is never plain seeing. Consciousness, on the other hand, is the ultimate seer. Hence seeing things in the original light of consciousness is what clarity is and seeing things in the reflected light of mind is what confusion is. Thus, all you need to do is to bring in the light of consciousness and the mind will be gone.
Living a life of clarity means living as per your inner nature. Consciousness is your reality and the same consciousness is functioning through you too. Hence, living as pure consciousness is living a life of clarity which is that you become a mirror. You just absorb the things as they are reflected on the screen of your consciousness without making any mental noise. Mental noise means you are no longer a mirror but has become a projector which is a deviation from your svabhava. Meditation is a method which helps you live a life of clarity.
