MEDITATION IS THE MOST SIMPLE AND YET THE HARDEST THING TO DO – WHY?

This difficulty is not because of meditation per se. This difficulty is also not because meditation is a difficult thing to do. Not at all. In fact, meditation is the simplest thing to do because for being in meditation you really do not have to do anything. In fact, for being in meditation, you, rather, have to drop all your doings. You are not supposed to do anything. The only thing you really need to do is not to do anything because meditation is not a doing. Meditation is just being; just relaxing, just existing like a presence. Dhayn karane ka namm nahi hai. Dhayn hone ka naam hai.

The difficulty comes from your sitting – sitting alone by yourself. That becomes the hardest thing to do. That’s why, when the time to sit for meditation comes, one becomes scared; one becomes worried because sitting alone by oneself is the most difficult thing to do. Sitting alone by yourself means, your movement or doing is restricted; you feel constricted within, whereas ego loves doing. Ego loves movement. The ego, thus, comes under pressure and feels threatened and hence the resistance. This resistance, in turn, is felt in the form of pulls and pressure from within.

Because meditation is non-doing and in that non-doing the ego loses its existence, in non-doing the ego disappears and hence the difficulty. The moment you sit n close your eyes, the ego pushes you from within to open your eyes. Because with your eyes open, you can feel your existence; with eyes open you feel as if you are busy doing something which the ego or mind enjoys, which is not the case when you shut your eyes while you sit in for meditation. Meditation means ignoring and going beyond ego which the ego does not like and hence it plays its game while you sit in for meditation in various ways and meditation thus becomes difficult.

This is so because all along we have been habituated to living a life of ego; living as a body-mind and mind exists in doing. Mind loves doing. Mind means a ‘doer’. Mind means ‘I’ or ‘I’m the doer’ which we all enjoy because in ‘doer’ our ego gets nourished which is not the case with meditation. Meditation means, not you but the existence exists and hence the difficulty.

Because of this habit of doing, most of us tend to avoid meditation and instead love or end-up doing other simple things as a substitute of meditation, which though are not really so.  Still, we do all those things simply because ‘doing’ is the easiest thing, than ‘being’. In doing we exist. That’s why ‘being’ or meditation is the hardest thing. In just ‘being’ you are, scared of losing yourself which makes meditation the hardest of all. However, if you persist with your practice (sadhana), one day, meditation for you, will become as simple and as effortless as breathing.
