IN DEEP SLEEP YOU ARE IN SURRENDER

In deep sleep (dreamless sleep), you are in surrender. Because in deep sleep, your individuality is not operative. In deep sleep, you do not exist as an individual. In deep sleep, you exist with the reality. You are one with the existence which is not the only reality but is also the source of all. In deep sleep, thus, you are in your natural state and being in your natural state is what surrender is.

In the waking hours, your individuality, better known as ego, is operative; your will (sankalpa and vikalpa) is operative and hence you are not in surrender. Thus, waking state is not your natural state because in that state you do not exist as a part of the existence but exist as an island, exist as a separate entity and hence you are not in surrender.  If you can exist in the same state as you existed in sleep, you would be in surrender in your waking hours as well. You would exist as a part of this existence and not as a separate entity.

Thus surrender does not mean that you surrender to someone on the outside. Surrender also does not mean surrendering something physical on the outside. No. Surrender simply means, recognizing that which IS. Your individuality or ego, is not your reality. Ego is imaginary, ego is acquired; ego is your creation; ego is make-believe and hence dropping ego or individuality is what surrender is. Dropping your will and living by the will of the existence is what surrender is.  When you keep your mind (another name of ego) aside, you are in surrender. That’s what sanyasa also is. Sanyasa is not leaving something on the outside but leaving or dropping that which is not natural; leaving that which is not your reality

At the same time, surrender does not mean that you will not do anything and sit idle at one place. Not at all. This only means that you will do whatever is needed but will do without any sense of egoity or sense of ‘doer-ship’. In surrender, you realize that the existence is the doer and you become a tool in the hands of the existence. You allow the existence to happen through you. Surrender is, remembering all the time that it’s not me as the small ‘i’ which is, but the big ‘I’ or the existence IS.

Since individuality or ego arises with our waking and hence we need to be in surrender in the waking hours as well. We need to carry forward the same state which existed in sleep, to our waking hours as well. The whole creation, except human being, is in deep surrender. The rest of the creation is just one with the existence and is being taken care of by the existence. The existence has brought us here in this human form which is considered to be the most sophisticated and intelligent form amongst all. It’s not your doing. You did not plan for this. Then why worry? The existence will deliver you. Leaving your will aside and living by the will of the existence is what surrender is.

Your existence within, which we know as the Self or consciousness is the real Guru. Guru on the outside or search for the Guru on the outside is only until you find your Guru within. Even the Guru on the outside too is manifestation of the same Self. Thus, Self or consciousness is all and living, moment-to-moment, in the light of your consciousness or chetana and not in the reflected light of mind is what surrender is. When you are in touch with your consciousness or energy within, you are in touch with the reality and being in touch with your reality is what surrender is.

All spiritual practices are structured around one fundamental fact i.e. how to keep your individuality or ego aside. Meditation is a sadhana which takes you beyond your individuality and lets you be in surrender to the reality.
