CONSCIOUSNESS IS ALWAYS FRESH; ALWAYS AS IT IS. OLD IS OF THE MIND
The consciousness is always fresh; always new because in consciousness there is no memory. Consciousness or the ultimate reality is like a cinema screen upon which is reflected the entire physical reality. This screen is never affected by the number of pictures which it shows up. Also, this screen never retains anything of that which appears on it and always remains unaffected and untainted by all that happens on the screen. For example, you see water, fire and blood spilling on the screen but the screen is never touched or spoiled by all those happenings. If it were, then could a new picture would have appeared on it? Never. A new picture can appear only on a screen which is empty and clean and has no trashes of old pictures. Similarly new letters can appear on a paper only when that paper is spotlessly clean.
Consciousness, thus, does not retain anything of what it shows up. Consciousness is always fresh; always as it is. Retention or memory is of the mind. Things appear to us as old or same because of the memory or mind. Mind is nothing but memory only. A tree, for example, to us, looks same or old because of our association with the memory which we carry. This is true for everything else because we always look at things through the eyes of our mind or through the memory. Mind is the storehouse of memory. On the other hand, consciousness or the screen just shows up what appears in front of it because consciousness does not add or impose anything of its own. Consciousness just reflects like a mirror. It just shows up things as it is or as they are. Mirror does not add anything of its own from its side to that which it reflects.
Consciousness is the ultimate seer which is pure reflection or pure seeing. When you become the seer i.e. when you see the things with your memory then you do not reflect but you distort the reality. Things appear to you not as they are but the way you want to see them. Because the reality is, coloured by your memory and hence they look the same or old to you. Old and new are ideas, which exist in our mind. Consciousness has no such ideas in it. A mirror’s quality of reflection is never impaired by the number of reflections and by the number of times it reflects anything because it never retains anything of what it shows up. In consciousness, everything is original all the time.
The root cause of human suffering and bondage is our association with the memory. If we learn to distance from memory, I mean mind, then, we can go beyond this memory and with that human suffering and bondage too would end. The only way to go beyond memory is to become a mirror i.e. consciousness and not a projector i.e. mind. Meditation is a method to distance from memory and become a mirror.
