MEDITATION IS ‘JUST SITTING’
Meditation is just sitting; which is that you are not doing anything, you are not doing anything at the level of your body and mind but you are simply sitting. Simply sitting is ‘being’ and ‘being’ is your existence. This whole existence is just ‘being’ or just ‘presence’. Thus, when you are just sitting and not doing anything, you are in the company of your existence; you are in the company of the divine. Simply sitting and not making effort of any kind is to be with your Self and to be with the Self is to be in meditation.
‘Doing’ is not meditation. Doing is ego; doing is your individuality. Doing is of the mind and hence so long doing is there; mind is there and you, therefore, cannot be in meditation because meditation is not a doing. Meditation is ‘non-doing’. Meditation is transcending mind. Only when you go beyond your mind, you can be in meditation. That’s why, simply sitting and doing nothing because that’s how you can keep your ego or individuality or your ‘doing’ aside so that you can just “be” and just ‘being’ or just ‘existing’ is the same as to be in meditation. Existence or divine is just presence and in your simple presence you too become the same existence. Existence, though, is the real ‘doer’ and yet it exists without any sense of being a ‘doer’. Simply sitting means not to be preoccupied within and yet allowing the whole existence to happen through you.
Just sitting is keeping your mind aside because your mind is your ego or your individuality. Meditation is to allow that dimension function which we know as divine and that is possible only when you keep your mind aside. Your mind, your ego or your individuality is ‘you’, the small ‘i’ or the lower ‘self’ whereas meditation is the big ’I’, the higher Self or HE. You can make way, you can make space for big ‘I’ or Self only by keeping the self or small ‘i’ aside. That’s why Kabira said prem gali ati sankari…….”that space is so narrow that it cannot accommodate both the lower self and higher Self at the same time”. Both are mutually exclusive and hence, cannot stay together like the two sides of a coin cannot exist at the same time. When ‘you’ are there ‘HE’ is not and when ‘HE’ is, ‘you’ are not.
