AWARENESS IS LIKE PLAYING A GAME OF KHO-KHO I.E. ‘TOUCH N GO’
Have you ever played or seen playing others the game of Kho-Kho? Game of Kho-Kho is a game of touch n go. What a player really does in this game is that he just touches one of the players, sitting in the circle and runs away promptly. He does not do anything more than that. He does not cling to or catches hold of the other guy. If he does that then he goes against the rules of the game and he is immediately declared out of the game.
Similarly, awareness, which is our reality, too is like playing a game of Kho-Kho with life i.e. just touch n go. Whatever the movement – within and without – which you come across, you just become aware of that and leave it there and just move on with life. You do not do anything more than that. Doing beyond i.e. doing more than becoming aware is your doing; your mental nonsense or your ego. For example, you looked at a tree. Now, you just becoming aware of that which appeared on the screen of your consciousness is what awareness or knowing is. You do not even say to yourself – Oh, it’s a tree! You do not go beyond pure seeing and make any reaction or add or impose something from your side. This is what awareness is, like touch n go which happens automatically with the movement (seeing a tree) happening on the screen of your consciousness.
Awareness is pure knowing i.e. knowing without thinking which is existential in the sense that it is not your doing but a doing of the existence itself. It happens automatically at the level of your consciousness. With that awareness, also happens what we know as witnessing (sakshi) or knowing (gyata) or seeing (drishta). These are the different names of the same thing which we know as awareness or consciousness.
Touch n go means just remaining alert – alert to all that which is happening or happens within and around. You do not go after or cling to those happenings but just become aware of those movements and leave them there. Catching hold (attachment or pakad) of what happens on the screen of your consciousness is of the mind. Mind means your reaction. Mind means getting entangled with that movement. When mind comes in action, you lose your awareness because mind and awareness cannot exist together. When mind is, awareness is not and when awareness is, mind is not.
When you are not busy in your mind, you are alert to what happens within and around. In no- mind state, your awareness functions at its best. However, when you are preoccupied with your mental activity i.e. thoughts, that you are not alert and thus you lose awareness i.e. you cling to the player (movement) and thus thrown out of the game of life which is what we know as suffering or misery. ‘Touch n go’ or pure awareness is total freedom with which you can play the game of life and yet remain completely untouched and unaffected by the happenings of life. Meditation is practicing ‘touch n go’ with what happens within and without.
