THE ONLY THING NEEDED TO KNOW ‘WHO AM I’ IS…….
Yes, you read it right. To know, ‘Who Am I’, the only thing needed is stillness. Yes, I repeat, it is stillness and stillness only and nothing else. This stillness which I am talking about is of the mind. If you become still within i.e. your mind becomes still then you will know who you are; you will be face-to-face with what we know as divine or truth. Why so? Because stillness is the quality of this existence, stillness is the heart of this existence and hence stillness is divine and only by becoming that or having the same quality which is the quality of this existence, you can know the existence or the divine.
Mind is movement and consciousness is stillness. What we need to know and understand is that consciousness and mind are, two sides of the same coin. One side is movement i.e. consciousness in action and the other side is stillness i.e. absence of action in consciousness. Mind, when stilled is the same consciousness or energy of this existence. This energy is the underlying foundation of whatever you see in this existence. However, the same consciousness when fluctuates or vibrates, it becomes mind. Thus, mind is nothing but movement in the same consciousness. Like movement is integral to mind, similarly, stillness is integral to consciousness. Movement is inherent quality of mind and stillness is inherent quality of consciousness. Mind means thought because mind is nothing but thought only. Mind exists in and by thoughts only. When thought is, mind is and when thought is not, mind is not.
Consciousness is like a pool of still water and thought or mind in action, is like throwing a stone in the pool of sill water. Thought, thus, is a disturbance to the consciousness. Consciousness reflects the reality like a pool of still water reflects the moon. For a pool to reflect the moon, the only thing needed is stillness of water. Similarly, for you to reflect the truth the only thing needed is stillness of mind. A turbulent or wavy pool cannot reflect the moon. Similarly, you cannot reflect or become aware of your reality or reality of this existence, when you are full of noise; full of thoughts within because thought is a disturbance to the stillness of consciousness like waves are a disturbance to the stillness of water.
Thus, mind is the obstacle; only barrier which is stopping you from realizing your true identity. We are not able to realize our true identity because within, we are not still, within we are not silent but shaking all the time. All the time, we are full of fluctuations; full of movement in the form of thoughts which keep happening constantly and uncontrollably. That’s why, all the practices (sadhana) are structured around this one fundamental aspect i.e. how to become still within, how to become still in mind because with stillness mind disappears. Mind lies in movement only. In stillness, there is no mind. Stillness is divine.
Thus, to know the divine, to know ‘Who Am I’, the only thing needed is the same quality, which is the quality of this existence i.e. stillness. Hence, only sadhana, which needs to be practiced is to, somehow, become still in your mind because with stillness, mind disappears and in the same stillness, what rises up simultaneously is, the divine or the truth. Meditation is a method to become still within.
