‘SAT KA SANG’ (‘COMPANY OF TRUTH’) IS SATSANG

The word Satsang is a combination of two words, namely, sat and sang. Sat means truth and sang means company. Thus, satsang, simply means, to be in the ‘company of the truth’. When you are in communion with the truth, you are in satsang.

Now, the question arises as what is sat or truth. The word Sat or Satya or truth, here, does not mean and does not refer to, what we usually understand, by this word, in our day-to-day language. The word sat or satya or truth, here, means and refers to that truth which is ‘The Truth’ i.e. the only truth. Spiritually speaking, Truth is only one and this truth is the universal truth – (saarvabhaumik sat) i.e. that which is the truth, across the universe. The universal Truth is not limited to any particular period; time or space but is the truth, irrespective of the time, period and space. Also, the truth, which we are referring to, is always the truth i.e. was the truth yesterday; is the truth today and will be the truth tomorrow. The Truth, in the spiritual context, therefore, is the absolute truth, meaning that it is self-subsisting i.e. it exists on its own and is not relative or dependent on something else, like the relative truth which is never self-subsisting but always exists with reference or with relation to the other and that’s why known as relative truth.

The sat or truth, therefore, is the reality of this existence and the reality of whatever the physical creation which we see around us. Further, sat or truth is always as it is, meaning that it is always changeless. There are no changes in it. The truth is always pure; undiluted and unaffected. That which changes, is temporary and hence relative truth but that which is changeless and that which is always ‘as it is’, is the absolute truth.

The sat or truth is, thus, eternal, with no beginning and end. Now, we need to know and understand that chetana or energy is all, is everything in this existence. All the creation which we see around us, is not only the manifestation of this energy but is also alive and functioning because of the presence of this energy only. For example, you are alive right now and reading this post only because of presence of this aliveness or chetana in your body. Next moment, if this energy or chetana moves on, from your body, this body will be pronounced as dead and will be consigned to the flames.

Thus, the energy or chetana or simply the consciousness is the Truth or reality of this existence and is the reality of all the forms and objects which we see around us. Hence, to be in the company of your energy or your consciousness is to be in the company of the truth and thus to be in satsang. Thus, Satsang is not, what we usually understand but satsang is to be with the truth and because energy or consciousness is the truth of this existence and hence only if you are in the company of your chetana, you are said to be in satsang.

I will give you a simple method which if you follow, you will always be in the company of the Truth; you will always be with your reality; you will always be in satsang and that method is, to simply keep your consciousness or chetana free, all the time. Thus, if you just keep your energy or chetana free - free from thoughts - which is that your energy is not entangled in your mental activity, then you are in satsang. Your consciousness is not free when it is entangled with your mental activity or thoughts. Keeping your consciousness free is ‘just being’ or ‘just existing’ and that is what satsang is because when your consciousness is free and is not burdened with memory or mind, then nothing else but only the reality or the truth or the existence exists.

In the moment when your consciousness is free, then you exist in your Self, you exist in your svabhava. Existing in your Self or svabhava is to exist in truth and hence to be in satsang. However, when your consciousness is entangled in thoughts or mental activity then you live in vibhava. Living in vibhava is not existing in satsang but is to live as an ego. Meditation is a method which prepares you to be in the company of the truth, to be in the company of your chetana or svabhava and thus be in satsang all the time.
