BY REMEMBERING YOUR DEATH, YOU CAN KNOW THAT WHICH IS DEATHLESS
You are not supposed to write or talk about death because death is considered a taboo. But let me reveal you one secret, which is that by remembering your death, you can also know that which is deathless, that which never dies or that which is not subject to destruction. For that to happen, what really, you need to do is to just follow one simple rule, which is that always remember your death, by constantly reminding yourself that ‘I may die next moment’. I am going to talk about this secret in this post and will try to explain as how constantly remembering your death, can work for you to find that which is deathless, as how remembering your mortality, can help you find that which is immortal. This will happen in stages, as described hereunder –
Stage 1 – Now, if you sincerely follow the above rule in your everyday life, then what will happen is that, you will begin to realize that this body is not going to be, there with me forever and one day it will fall, which we know as death. You will, thus, slowly and gradually, become aware of impermanent nature of your body.
Stage 2 - When you become aware of impermanent nature of your body, you will also realize that everything else or all that is physical, in this existence, too, is as real as you are and hence all that is there, is subject to death or destruction. In the process, you will, thus, become aware of the impermanent nature of the worldly things or the physicality as well.
Stage3 - As a result of your knowing the impermanent nature of the world, what will happen now is that, slowly and gradually, everything in this existence will begin to appear temporary and passing, to you. You will notice that physicality is like pictures on the screen, which keep appearing and disappearing, from time to time. You will become aware of their impermanence, in the way, they appear and disappear; come and go; rise and fall; make and unmake themselves and are born and dead.
Stage 4 - When you become aware of the transitory nature of the worldly things, obviously, you will not treat them or behave with them, as if they are permanent, as is the case now. You will thus, not get attached or get stuck with the things on the outside. Instead, you will treat them and behave with them as fleeting or temporary, which they actually are. You will only give due importance which they deserve. You will not, hence, give extra importance to the passing things and you will just move on, with your life, without getting stuck with them.
Stage 5- As a result of your constantly remembering that ‘I may die next moment’ slowly n gradually, your focus will begin to shift from one dimension to the other i.e. from that which is temporary to that which is permanent; from that which comes and goes; to that which is always there, from that which moves to that which is still; from that which is born and is dead to that which is deathless. In this process, slowly, you will become aware of that stillness within, which is always still and is never touched; never disturbed or never moved by all those happenings on the outside and is always ‘as it is’. It’s worth knowing that only when your focus begins to shift from one thing, then only you can become aware of the other thing. Without this shift, you can never become aware of the other dimension.
Stage 6 - Once, you become aware of your reality or permanent nature, then death cannot scare you anymore. You will not be afraid of death because you, now, know the deathless within you. You know that death cannot do anything to you. By knowing your permanent nature, you become deathless, because death is of the body or of the temporary only. That which is permanent is always permanent. Now, you will go untouched by life or by all that which happens around you because nothing can touch you or nothing can disturb you. Life can touch you only, so long, you do not know the difference between that which is subject to death and that which is deathless.
