DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR BIKE ALL THE TIME OR ONLY WHEN YOU USE IT?

This is a question which a sadhak (seeker) must ask himself. If the answer to this question is ‘Yes’, that you remember your bike all the time in your waking hours then, please know that you are bike-conscious. Being, bike-conscious means, you have become the bike itself because all the time, your thoughts are about the bike only. You are focussed upon your bike only. Your energy, is centred around your bike only and thus, you work, all the time, for the protection of your bike only. Being bike-conscious means, you know only the bike and all your life is woven around the bike only. So, if you are just bike-conscious then you will know only bike and will never know all that which is beyond the bike.

However, if your answer is “No’ meaning, that you don’t remember your bike all the time but only when you use it, then please know that your bike is just a tool in your hands. A tool means you remember it only, when you need to use it and not preoccupied, all the time, with the thoughts about the tool. Your energy is not bike-conscious which is that it is not centred around the bike only; it does not work for the bike alone; it is not focussed upon the bike only. Remembering bike as a tool, means your energies are kept free and you thus have the possibility of knowing all that which is beyond this bike as well.

The analogy above, though, is with reference to a bike but is exactly applicable to our body as well. If you remember your body all the time, during your waking hours, (sleep state is not relevant because, in sleep, in any case you have nothing in your experience) then you are body-conscious. Body-conscious means, your consciousness or energy is just centred around and focussed upon your body only. Being body-consciousness means, you have become a body only because all the time your thoughts are about the body, about the physical or about the forms and objects only. You are completely identified with your body and hence all your activities are centred around your body only. You, thus, know only body and live here as a body and work for survival or preservation of your body only. You, know nothing else than this body or that which is beyond this body.

Hence, do not give too much importance to your body and instead use your body like a tool. Also, remember it only when you need to use it, like you remember your bike, when you ride it. If you follow this simple rule and remember your body only as a tool and nothing more than that, then one day, you will also know that which is more than or beyond this body. Remembering body as a tool and only when it is needed, means you are keeping your consciousness or energy free, which is not the case in our current state of body-consciousness. In current state, our consciousness is entangled, all the time, in thoughts of the bodies only and focussed around the physical only.

By treating body as a tool, you will begin to distance yourself from your body and slowly, your focus will shift away from body to that which is beyond this body. This is shifting your focus from physical to non-physical; from body-consciousness to ‘Being’- consciousness. ‘Being-conscious’ is end of your suffering. ‘Being-consciousness’ means, you going beyond this bodily existence, while being in the body itself. Meditation is a method to know and use body as a tool.
