TO BE IN ONE’S RELIGION (DHARMA) IS TO BE RELIGIOUS

To be religious is not, what we usually understand. What we usually understand, by being religious, is to follow an organized belief system; visiting religious places; reading scriptures; listening to religious discourses etc. But this is not being religious because, there is nothing of religion in it. Fundamentally, being religious is, to be established in one’s essential nature or in one’s religion (dharma) which beholds (dharan karna) you because, your nature is intrinsic to your existence, without which you just cannot imagine your existence.

Your essential nature or religion is your chetana or consciousness which is integral to your existence which beholds you all the time. Without chetana or consciousness, your existence is not possible. For example, in your sleep, despite the fact, that all other external props and supports which you consider as me (body and mind); mine (your possessions) and others (world) are not there in your experience and yet, you exist; you remain alive, simply because your essential nature or consciousness continues to be with you. If, your essential nature or your religion or your chetana leaves your company then, this body will be declared as dead and consigned to the flames, as we usually do with dead bodies.

Chetana or consciousness, therefore, is your essential or original nature which holds you, in this body, all the time. Your essential nature or consciousness, is the absolute reality which exists all the time, without any prop or external support, but on its own and of its own accord. Body and mind are not your true nature or reality and hence not integral to your existence as it happens in your sleep. Body and mind are just tools or extras which, act as support to your existence or your nature but they cannot exist without the absolute reality or your nature.

Thus, to be in one’s essential nature or chetana, all the time, is to be religious. Being religious is, to become an expression of your consciousness and living, moment to moment, in the light of your consciousness or dharma. If, you live all the time, in your essential nature i.e. you live and act out of your consciousness, moment to moment, then you attain finally to your nature which, is that you go beyond the physicality or bodily existence, which we know as nirvana or moksha or muktimukti or liberation from physical existence.

However, problem with the humanity, is that largely the human beings do not live in their essential nature or religion but live in acquired nature, which is not original to them and hence they live in vibhava. Living in one’s mind or becoming an expression of one’s mind is to live in vibhava because mind is not natural or integral or original to your ‘being’ or to your ‘existence’. Mind is something external or extra to you which you gather from here. Mind is nothing but information or memory which, you gather as a part of your living here. Living in one’s mind and by one’s mind is to exist here as a body because mind exists with reference to physical or bodies only. So, if you exist here as a mind, then you will exist in bondage because physical is bondage. Living in one’s consciousness is freedom because consciousness is your nature.

Honestly speaking, you do not need any meditation, because meditation is your original nature or religion. But, since, we have forgotten our original nature and are habituated to living in acquired nature or mind and hence the need for meditation because meditation is nothing but just a reminder, to you, to come back to your essential nature or religion. Thus, to become meditative is to become religious or to become religious is to become meditative, which is to live in one’s original nature or to exist in one’s natural state and that is what being spiritual, too, is because, being spiritual is to be with your spirit, with your chetana; with your consciousness or with your energy, which is your essential nature. Hence being spiritual or being religious or being meditative are, one and the same thing.
