ARE YOU LIVING YOUR LIFE IN FORGETFULNESS OR REMEMBRANCE?
Recently, I was aboard a cruise liner and thus, had an opportunity to spend a couple of nights there, right in the middle of the sea. The ship was full of all the attractions which, you usually will find in a big city. These attractions and activities on the ship were more than enough to keep you busy there, all the times. While onboard and being busy in the activities there, you never get to know that you are actually in waters. Only, when you took your sight off, these attractions; only when you took time off, these activities, and came out in open, you got to realize the truth that, you were in the middle of the sea, surrounded by waters from all sides.
Now, the reason I am sharing this with you is that, this is the case with most of the human beings. We, too, are so lost in the outer world, in the forms and objects, which we see around us that, we tend to think and assume that what we see, is all; what we see is the reality. We think that, what we are doing or busy with, is the only way to exist here or that is all the life is about. Because, we never take our sight off these attractions, because we never take time off, our activities and doings, we never get to know that which is real. We are so lost in the known or the seen on the outside that, we never become aware of the knower - the one who knows. We never become aware of the seer - the one who sees.
We are so busy with pictures (forms and objects) which keep appearing in front of our eyes that we tend to miss the very screen upon which these pictures arise and happen. Even during the times when, there are no forms and objects in front of our eyes, we usually remain lost in the memory of those pictures, I mean, thoughts only. A thought is nothing but just a memory and memory or thought is of the pictures only, of the forms and objects only. The screen or the emptiness has no memory and never creates any memory.
Being lost in or being busy with the pictures only, is living life in forgetfulness; is living life in unconsciousness (behoshi) because picture or the known or the seen, is not your reality. Reality or truth is the screen; the knower; the seer and hence, living life as a screen, as a knower or as a seer or as pure awareness, is living life in remembrance.
Now, this does not mean that you should drop all your activities or you should stop all your doings. Not at all. This only means that, you do what you want to do, you live where you want to live, but you always live your life in remembrance, i.e. remembering, all the times, the knower, the one who knows. Forgetting the knower, and just being busy with the known, all the times, is living life in forgetfulness. Living life in forgetfulness is a fake life because physicality is not your reality. Awareness, which is nonphysical, is your reality.
So, while being on the ship and being lost in the activities there and not realising that you are on board a ship and you are in the middle of waters is forgetfulness i.e. forgetting your ‘center’, and only remaining busy and lost on the periphery i.e. body and mind or physicality. Living life in one’s own make-believe reality or being lost in what is happening in front of your eyes, is forgetfulness.
This is the only thin line, separating spirituality from materialism. If, you live your life in forgetfulness or unconsciousness (behoshi) then, you are a materialist; you are a worldly person and if, you live your life in remembrance or consciousness (hosh) or awareness, then you are a spiritual person. Meditation is taking time off, all your doings; all your attractions and being in the company of your reality and hence to be in remembrance of that which IS.
