MEDITATION IS NOT FOR ‘BENEFITS’ AS IS USUALLY UNDERSTOOD
Because all benefits,
including health benefits are worldly
whereas, meditation is non-worldly. Meditation is the only way, to go beyond
this limited or bodily existence. Thus, meditation is certainly not for ‘benefits’
as is usually understood. Though, it is also true that some side effects of
meditation, in terms of health and other worldly gains, happen on the sidelines.
But, those things are only, the by-products of meditation, are just incidental
to the process of meditation.
Rather, these benefits
are distractions to the main goal because, if you focus upon those things and get
carried away by these so-called benefits then, you will miss the main product of
meditation, for which it is really meant. That’s the reason, a real sadhak,
never pursues and is never interested in the incidental things. A serious sadhak
pursues meditation with the ultimate objective in mind i.e. going beyond this
bodily existence because, he knows that, bodily existence is bondage.
Meditation is the
technology which, if you pursue, seriously, then it becomes a vehicle for your
liberation – liberation from this physical existence – which is the only and
ultimate goal of meditation. This is, for the reason that meditation is
transforming, which transforms your nature from inside out. Transformation is
not a change because change is on the surface but transformation is complete
overhauling which happens from within and hence is permanent and stays with you
forever.
How meditation is a tool for transformation? We all know that; energy or consciousness is the reality of this existence and reality of all what we see around. This energy, is conscious or aware by itself (swayambhu) and that’s why, the name ‘consciousness’. Thus, awareness is the nature of consciousness which is pure illumination like, a light bulb. Awareness is your reality too. Meditation is pure awareness and awareness is liberating because, awareness is like a fire which burns up all that is unwanted, all that is unneeded like a goldsmith does to gold. By burning up the gold in the fire, the goldsmith makes the gold pure i.e. free from all impurities. The same is true for awareness because, awareness transforms mind energy back into pure energy by eradicating imprints of karmic memory from the energy.
This transformation is like alchemy i.e. transforming something in a mysterious way, like turning base metal into gold. Transformation of energy happens not by your ‘doing’ but by just ‘being’ because you can access your energy only by just ‘being’ and not by ‘doing’. ‘Being’ is just presence – presence of chetana and hence is a state of pure awareness. In a state of ‘being’ you are fully awake and conscious within. Meditation or just ‘being’ thus transforms your nature, like a new avatar which retains nothing of old in it and thus, puts a full stop to this business of avagaman, once and for all.
So, if you are using meditation as a means for ‘benefits’ then please know that, you are preparing to come back to this physical world because, you attain to and become, what you focus upon. But, if you use it as a tool for transforming your nature; your energy then, you are using it as a vehicle to go beyond the physicality - the only and ultimate objective of spirituality and of meditation.
