One thing which, you need to know and
understand is that once you have come in the human form there is no going back. You can only go to the next higher level but you
cannot regress back to a lower form because, there is no such thing as ‘going
back’, in this existence. It’s like you cannot be sent back to a lower class
when you have already arrived in a higher class. This is for the simple reason,
that evolution has gone through a certain process which cannot be reversed. This
is one side of this human form. However, the other side of this form is,
getting stuck where you are. The worst thing that could happen and usually
happens to the humanity is, getting stuck with this form and not moving on.
It’s like, I
used my finger, to point at the moon but instead of looking at the moon, you
looked at my finger and got stuck with the finger. That is exactly, what is
happening to most of the human beings, that they are getting stuck with their physicality
i.e. body-mind.
Now,
we also need to know that, this does not happen to other forms. Other creatures, do not and can never get stuck with their present forms because the nature is taking
care of their evolution. The nature is helping them to move on to the next
level. However, this nature’s push to the next level, is no more available to us,
once we have arrived in the human form. From here on, we will have to strive to
move on to the next level of evolution. This is for the reason that we have
come with an added advantage over other forms. This advantage comes to us in
the fact that we, in the human form, have evolved to a certain level of
consciousness which other creatures have not. Animal world is total
unconsciousness. Though, we are largely unconscious and a bit conscious and
hence growing into full consciousness is the next and final level of evolution.
Human state,
thus, is like a limbo (trishnaku) state, a sort of hanging in the air.
Though, his lower side is protected but upper side is kept open. He is, thus,
neither on the ground, nor in the sky. A human being is, neither an animal nor
the divine. Though, he cannot go back to the animal form and yet for him to attain
to the divinely state i.e. to evolve into full consciousness, is possible only by
his own efforts because nature’s push is no more available to him.
The
human being, therefore, has to become aware of this larger possibility. He must
realize that only by disappearing into this existence he can become the
existence itself. This is like a river realizing that it cannot go back, but
only by losing its individual identity as a river and disappearing into its
source i.e. the ocean, that it can become the ocean itself. River is
individuality and ocean is universality. River, getting stuck with its
individuality is to exist here in a limited way but its disappearance into the
ocean is, to exist here in a limitless way. However, this realization that only
by losing its individuality, the river can become the ocean has to occur to the
river. Without this realization, river cannot become the ocean.
This
is what being spiritual is, which is to realize that individual or limited
existence is bondage and to exist here in a limitless way is freedom. It is
worth knowing that consciousness is the goal and the whole creation is rushing
to that. Our evolution to the current state of little consciousness is evidence
of that. You can only postpone full consciousness but cannot avoid it. Later or
sooner, you will attain to full consciousness. That’s why spirituality, because
spirituality is that striving. Spirituality is that sadhana to become fully conscious, in one go, in this life itself, instead
of making it happen in installments, over many lives. Growing into full
consciousness, therefore, is the only option for us and hence the ultimate goal
of spirituality.
