KHALI DIMAG SHAITAN KA GHAR NAHI HAI (EMPTY MIND IS NOT DEVIL’S WORKSHOP) AS IS UNDERSTOOD. KHALI DIMAG ISHVAR KA GHAR HAI (EMPTY MIND IS DIVINE’S WORKSHOP)
When we say empty mind is devil’s workshop (khali dimag shaitan ka ghar hai), what we, usually, understand by that is, ‘someone sitting idle and not doing anything physically’. But that’s not correct to say because, physical doing, though seen by others is not the only doing. There is another kind of doing, which, though, is not seen by others and yet that doing keeps us engaged, our whole lives. That doing is mental doing. Our mental activity or thoughts, are much more impactful than our physical doing and keeps us busy, all the time, all our lives. Thus, a person, though, not involved in any physical doing but if, preoccupied in one’s mental activity or thoughts, then he cannot be considered a person with empty mind in the spiritual sense.
In the spiritual
context, empty mind, means ‘empty’ in literal sense which is that your mind is
absolutely empty – empty of all thoughts; empty of all your mental activity.
That is what empty mind, really, is and such an empty mind is not at all
devil’s workshop (shaitan ka ghar) but is, rather, divine’s workshop (ishavar
ka ghar). Empty mind is a boon (vardan), because in empty
mind resides the divine. That’s the reason that empty mind, is the ultimate
goal of spirituality. A person who does sadhana to empty his mind of all
his thoughts, I mean, to empty himself of all that is not intrinsic to his
existence is, indeed, the spiritual person.
Why this is so? This is for the simple reason that empty mind, is no-mind; empty mind is still mind and no-mind or still mind means the divine or the consciousness. Consciousness is intrinsic to our existence. Mind i.e. thought, is external to our existence and hence a disturbance. Mind is only when it is full – full of thoughts; full of mental activity. Removing this disturbance, I mean, dissolution of mind, dissolution of that which is not integral to your existence, is the only sadhana one needs to do to attain to the divine or the Buddhahood.
An empty mind, is not a mind at all, but the consciousness or chetana of this existence itself. Because consciousness and mind are the two sides of the same coin and these are the only two possibilities to exist here. Mind is movement and consciousness is stillness. Mind when, still is divine or consciousness and when there is a movement in the same consciousness, it becomes mind. Did you notice the difference between a silent pool and a disturbed pool of water? In a silent pool you can see the moon as it is but not in a disturbed pool. A silent pool reflects the moon ‘as it is’ but a disturbed pool cannot reflect the reality. The same is true for consciousness and mind. Consciousness is stillness and hence reflects the reality ‘as it is’ but mind is movement; disturbance in consciousness and hence distorts the reality.
That is the only
distance which one needs to travel from mind to no-mind; from human to divine;
from ‘self’ to ‘Self’; from ‘vibhava’ to svabhava’; from
individual existence to universal existence. Hence, please take a break from
your ‘doing’ and practice non-doing or empty mindedness. Please know that if,
you cannot sit idle without any ‘doing’, meaning, if you really need to,
somehow, keep yourself busy, doing something, then your mind is a devil’s
workshop and not divine’s abode. You need to work upon your mind. Meditation is taking time off, your doings
and practicing non-doing or empty mindedness.
