“CAN A SPOON TASTE THE SOUP?”
Do you know that, Ananda, a bhikkhu, a very close disciple of Lord Buddha, who, though, always, 24/7, lived with him, and yet he could not attain to his ultimate nature, though, many other bhikkhus, who were around Buddha, made it. So, when someone asked, Gautama, why Ananada couldn’t make it, he, said “Can a spoon taste the soup?”
Yes, Gautama was right, because only a tongue, can taste the soup and not the spoon. A tongue, is sensitive to tase, because it has life in it and hence, a tongue alone, can taste the soup. A spoon can never do so, because a spoon has no life in it and that’s why, a spoon is not sensitive to the taste and therefore, it can never taste the soup.
Now, please understand that, fundamentally, you are life, the energy, and sensitivity is the nature of this life energy, and hence, the sensitivity is of the life and because of the life or of the consciousness only. Tongue, though, tastes but tongue is just a medium, like the eyes, which only can see. But taste is because of the aliveness or the life or the consciousness, in the body. That’s why, a spoon can’t taste the soup, because a spoon has no life, no aliveness, no consciousness in it.
Life is sensitive, by nature and hence, knows all. Life knows all and that’s why, life or consciousness, is the ultimate knower, ultimate seer. So, if you become just life, then you will be sensitive enough to know, all that happens around or within you. You will know all, which is worth knowing, in this existence and that’s what enlightenment is. Enlightenment doesn’t mean that you become a trikaldarshi i.e. you know present, past n future. Not at all. Enlightenment, simply means, knowing the nature of one’s existence i.e. to know, ‘Who Am I’. Because, that’s the only thing, worth knowing, in this existence.
Existence is the only reality, the only existential thing in this existence, which is, was and will be. Existence is all and is forever and rest all, is not existential, but just temporary and passing things, which keep appearing and disappearing, coming and going, making and unmaking itself. Hence, for knowing, all that is there, the only thing, you need to do, is that you must become sensitive i.e. you must become life.
Now, though, you too are a piece of life, but because, most of the times, you are not life and instead, exist here like a spoon, and hence, you don’t know the taste of what you eat or what you do. Most of the times, you are not life but full of your own stuff and therefore, you are not aware of your actions. That’s why, you never become aware of what happens within or around you.
That’s why it’s said, that ours is a state of unconsciousness or of behoshi because, all the time, we are not life but we are ego or full of our own things, which have nothing to do with the life. All the time, we are full of our thoughts, full of our nonsense and that’s why, we miss what’s there. Because, we are not sensitive, not life or not consciousness but always preoccupied, in our unconsciousness, we are missing enlightenment, like Ananada missed it.
Now, you really don’t have to bring life or consciousness from outside, because life or consciousness is your nature, is your reality. But your own thoughts, which run nonstop in your mind, have made you non-life, like a spoon. Your thoughts, are not life or consciousness. Hence, remove your thoughts and your sensitivity or life will come to the fore and you will be full of life and you will know all, which is worth knowing.
Thus, for becoming sensitive or life or consciousness, you just need to distance yourself from, all that’s not life. Hence, learn to distance from your body and mind and you will become more and more sensitive or more and more life. So, if you become sensitive enough i.e. if you just become life or consciousness, which is your reality, then you will be sensitive enough to know, all that’s worth knowing in this existence. Meditation is nothing but practicing to become sensitive or full of life or of consciousness.
Well written with nice message 👍
